The USGS film Secrets in Stone tells the story of how records of magnetic reversals helped lead to the evolution of the plate tectonics theory. It’s usually done if you’re welding thinner plates. Therefore, large amounts of heat appear at the anode, typically of all the heat. Reversals are not instantaneous they happen over a period of hundreds to thousands of years, though recent research indicates that at least one reversal could have taken place over a period of one year. It’s a condition where the anode is made positive while the work is made negative. The last reversal was about 780,000 years ago. They can happen as often as every 10 thousand years or so and as infrequently as every 50 million years or more. Electronic equipment plugged in to an outlet with reversed polarity will still function, but that doesnt mean its safe. The effect of different chemicals in the covering may change this condition. The bottom line is that reversed polarity at outlets is a shock hazard. Electrode-negative (straight polarity) results in faster melt-off of the electrode and, therefore, faster deposition rate. These reversals are random with no apparent periodicity to their occurrence. With few exceptions, electrode-positive (reversed polarity) results in deeper penetration. Incredible as it may seem, the magnetic field occasionally flips over! The geomagnetic poles are currently roughly coincident with the geographic poles, but occasionally the magnetic poles wander far away from the geographic poles and undergo an "excursion" from their preferred state. Earth's dynamo has no preference for a particular polarity, so, after an excursional period, the magnetic field, upon returning to its usual state of rough alignment with the Earth’s rotational axis, could just as easily have one polarity as another. When lavas or sediments solidify, they often preserve a signature of the ambient magnetic field at the time of deposition. We can see evidence of magnetic polarity reversals by examining the geologic record.

This requires a high degree of linguistic skill, and it is why we would always recommend working with a human subtitling agency over any subtitling software. There are some fairly strict limitations with regards to character limit and the time a subtitle must remain on screen (more on these later), and so a subtitler’s role is often to represent the words in the most accurate way, while cutting it down to meet the restrictions. Importantly, this isn’t always about copying the text word for word into subtitles. Once this document has been created, a subtitler will consider how best to use this text to create the most effective subtitles possible. This simply means writing it out word for word. The first step in the subtitling process is to transcribe the audio from the video. This type of subtitling is most common on films, where action other than the words is important. For example, an SDH subtitle might read ‘ sad music plays’, or ‘ indistinct chatter’. The difference is that they have been created specifically with a deaf or hard of hearing audience in mind, and so will describe other audible details as well as the words, in order to help the audience understand the action or mood of the scene. These subtitles are similar to closed caption subtitling in that they are optional, and will usually appear at the bottom of the screen. These are the subtitles that can be turned on or off, and will almost always appear in one or two lines of text at the bottom of the screen. Typically offered as an option on DVDs, and more recently streaming services such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer, closed caption subtitles are the kind you’ll probably be most familiar with. This recent video by Forbes, regarding NASA’s renaming of its Washington HQ after Mary W. (They aren’t always positioned at the bottom of the screen). In most cases, this is a decision you’ll make at the design stage of the filmmaking process, as you may need to leave space on screen for the words. This is when the subtitles you create are permanently ‘burned in’ to your video, i.e. We’ll expand more on this later, but first we’ll quickly define each type of subtitling. The type you choose will depend on the purpose of your videos and your intended audience. There are three main types of video subtitling services: open caption, closed caption and SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). Read on to find out everything you need to know about adding subtitles to your video content. It can boost the accessibility of your content, the attention your audience pays to it and even how much Google likes it. If you are creating video content of any type, adding subtitles is certainly something to consider. Indeed, a recent study by Ofcom suggests that 80% of subtitle users are not deaf. While this is still the primary function of subtitles, the explosion in the number of screens we use (as well as the amount of video content we now absorb) has seen subtitles become more frequently-used than ever, for a whole host of reasons. Once audio became possible in film and television, subtitles became a tool for accessibility, allowing those with hearing difficulties to understand the on-screen action. They were originally used in the 1900s in the first cinematic films the silent nature of these movies meant that filmmakers needed to add a little explanation of the action to keep the audience engaged. Subtitles are the written representation of the audio in any form of moving picture, from a Hollywood blockbuster to a YouTube video on how to replace your spark plugs. The 4D interior-style ride seats up to four riders in a car, then glides through 13 areas guarded by NINJAGO foes like Lord Garmaddon, King of the Skulkuns, or the snake-like Great Devourer (who, it turns out, can only be defeated if everyone in the car works together). Then get ready for the main attraction: NINJAGO The Ride. Recharge at the Ninja Kitchen with a banh mi sandwich on crusty baguette or a steamed bao bun, filled with your choice of crispy pork belly, lemongrass chicken, or baked sweet chili tofu-another good example of LEGOLAND California’s ability to diversify its menu beyond hot dogs and pretzels. Nearby, kids can test their balance on the playground-style Kai’s Spinners, showcase their agility on Cole’s temple-oriented Rock Climb, or test their speed by pushing lit-up buttons in Jay’s Lightning Drill speed cage. There’s Zane’s Temple Build, where kids can build with LEGO bricks along the perimeter of a LEGO Asian temple. The one-acre NINJAGO World zone sits near the park’s entrance and is festooned with LEGO statues of guardian dragons and ninja warriors, as well as four play areas-each designed to cultivate a different ninja skill. LEGO Ninjago World takes that magic to another level, focusing on LEGO’s line of spunky ninja characters. While the focus here leans towards making little ones smile, there’s plenty to entertain bigger kids and grown-ups too: the park has more than 60 rides, shows, and attractions-including three rollercoasters, live shows by the LEGO Friends, and entertainment and meet-and-greets related to various LEGO incarnations, from Ninjago to The LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman.Ī hands-on spirit permeates LEGOLAND California more than most theme parks, from the kid-made vehicles in the Build & Test play area to the pulley-driven Kid Power Towers ride. With both onsite and nearby hotels, as well as its own water park and aquarium, LEGOLAND California has grown from a tribute to the plastic bricks into the kind of place a family could spend a few days. It’s conveniently located within an hour or two of a variety of theme parks and attractions in Southern California-but it’s also just few minutes’ drive to a state beach. This theme park in Carlsbad, on the north side of San Diego County, first opened in 1999. Kwasi should be given award as one of the best. It’s hard to say who enjoys LEGOLAND more: the little ones running around in a magical world created by 60 million LEGO plastic bricks, or their parents who get a kick out of it too. I will be coming back to Columbus and fully intend to stay at Hotel LeVeque again. Needless to say we were very impressed with Hotel LeVeque and especially with Kwasi and could not have asked for a better stay. At the conclusion of our weekend we found that our flight was cancelled - Kwasi remained very helpful and helped us work out the issues. Throughout the weekend, Kwasi remained very helpful with recommendations and great advice. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful giving us great recommendations for dinner. He was amazing and should probably be on the board of trustees for Columbus Ohio tourism. We dropped off our bags and were on our way out for dinner asking Kwasi (who is the concierge/manager) about recommendations. We were checked in by a very friendly and helpful hotel clerk. I have to say from the moment we arrived we were very impressed. We stayed at Hotel LeVeque based on recommendations by our niece whose wedding we were attending and fell in love. While it's hard for me to find something truly negative about this watch, I believe it's worth mentioning the materials used. So far I've been praising the Speedy for many of its aspects. The Omega Speedmaster on Blue ZULUDIVER Herringbone - Image Credit: WatchGecko Online Magazine It's both professional and casual intricate and simple rugged and delicate. This, to me, truly is an all-rounder watch for any situation. The watch offers a classic design that any watch enthusiast will know, anyone can appreciate, and that will compliment any outfit you wear. And this is where you can't go wrong with the Speedmaster. The most important criterion for wearing a watch every day is the design and looks. This, again, personalises the watch, as I'm usually the only person close enough to hear it. I can even hear the watch quietly ticking away as I'm writing this article. I notice the rhythmical tick from time to time and it reminds me of how much I enjoy this watch. It's loud compared to most other watches I've seen but it's not disruptive, the sound is yet another detail that you can only notice by wearing the watch yourself. The need to manually wind the watch makes it far more personal in my opinion, it's as if every time you wind it, you become a part of the watch. I enjoy the morning ritual of winding the watch during breakfast. The 1861 calibre chronograph movement is great value for money at this price range. The Omega Speedmaster fitted to the Hinxhill Leather Strap in Olive Green - Image Credit: WatchGecko Online Magazine When you put that together with the angled case, the overall watch appears smaller and more intricate. The tachymeter scale was set on the outer bezel and the dial has been brought inward, this way the dial measures at just 34mm in diameter. However, the case and dial have been designed in such a way that the watch looks and feels smaller than it actually is. Until I tried the watch on, I was put off by the 42mm case diameter, as watches larger than 40mm don't usually fit my wrist very well. I'd like to start off by talking about the size and the case design. There's a chance that you won't be going into space wearing this watch any time soon though, so what makes it a good watch to wear daily? When buying a Speedmaster, you are likely buying into its heritage. It's important to note that the Speedmaster design remains largely unchanged even to this day, with the original Moonwatch designs still being sold. They built on the original design and now offer options with different dials, complications and sizes. Omega had a design on its hands that was both iconic and loved by the public. The range became increasingly popular, spawning many new versions of the Speedy. The Omega Speedmaster on the Simple Handmade in Light Brown - Image Credit: WatchGecko Online Magazine ( Find out more about the story of the moon watch here!) I'm quite the space geek myself, and I must say that if not for Omega's involvement in NASA's space missions, I might never have purchased this watch. It was after Omega was chosen as the official watch manufacturer for NASA's space missions, that 'Professional' was added to Speedmaster's name, and the watch we love today was born. Hodinkee also wrote a fantastic article describing the full history of the model. Omega had to compete with the likes of Rolex and Longines over this spot, if you're interested in the gritty details of the rigorous tests the watches were put to, see our more detailed article on the Speedmaster's history here. However, that part of Speedmaster's heritage is overshadowed by one of its main selling points NASA had chosen Omega's chronographs for all its manned missions into space, and more importantly, the Apollo programme. At that point, Omega had already been quite involved in that industry, being the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. The Speedmaster name dates back to 1957, when it was introduced as a sports and racing chronograph. It's impossible to talk about this watch without glancing over what this range has been through and what made it so popular. The Omega Speedmaster fitted to the Tropic Rubber strap - Image Credit: WatchGecko Online Magazine I have to put some amount of faith in Bungie that transmog is going to be based on what you have in collections, ie. I think I have to come to terms with the fact that it’s probably not worth saving sunsetting legendary armor sets for cosmetic reasons, namely the idea that I may need them in order to convert them for transmog.Īt this point, saving full armor sets across three classes that I’m not using simply takes up too much space. I have been saving solid rolls for at least one piece of every kind of exotic armor, which I am not deleting form my vault, just in case something gets buffed. The exception here is if you don’t want to lose any treasured kill counters.Įxotic armor can be pulled from collection but it’s garbage base stats.

One Piece Odyssey presents some pretty inventive gameplay systems in both exploration and combat. Iconic scenes are given tribute, like the farewell in Alabasta, but the weight isn’t there.Ĭinematics can get pretty cool, but the story they’re telling never feels deep.īut the story isn’t the only draw. It’s not a good introduction for newbies, nor does any single story echo the emotional highs of the scenes found in the manga and anime. Stories that could be celebrations of the source material instead serve as nostalgia trips and little else. Enemies are stronger than they used to be to accommodate the Straw Hat crew’s higher power levels. A character’s hideout switches from a dock to a sewer to make a more traditional dungeon. While this opens up the field for some interesting plot developments, it is largely utilitarian. This is explained away by Lim regularly reminding your characters that memories are fuzzy and things often change when exploring the world of Memoria. It skips the bulk of the main events, reveals hidden alliances immediately, and generally makes little attempt to recreate the experience of the original story. Unfortunately, the game assumes you’ve experienced these stories already. This comprises the bulk of the game, with excursions around the island filling in the gaps. The mission becomes simple: regain those powers, discover the island’s mysteries, and teach everyone some lovely lessons about friendship.Īs for how to find and unlock those cubes, your crew is heading back in time, baby! More specifically, they’re heading into Memoria, where they encounter memory versions of four of their old adventures. After Lim sees the pirates on her island, she quickly locks their fighting prowess into cubes and scatters them across the island, leaving the pirate crew without years and years of power creep. Living on this island are Adio and Lim, a mysterious explorer and superpowered girl, respectively. This mysterious island holds plenty of secrets and seems to be of great historical importance to the One Piece world. The Straw Hat Pirates find themselves shipwrecked (via a very cool introductory sequence involving a stream that launches their ship into the sky and an awaiting storm) on the legendary island of Waford. It’s the landing that gets you into trouble. |
